Martin Scorsese Admits Guillermo Del Toro’s Frankenstein Haunted Him Long After the Credits Rolled

Guillermo del Toro’s gothic sci-fi movie, Frankenstein, has continued to receive praise even months after its release, with the acclaimed filmmaker Martin Scorsese being the latest and one of its most prominent admirers.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Scorsese said,

I actually dreamed of it. It’s a remarkable work. The film stays with you. It just stays with you. It’s very moving. A remarkable feat. Grand opera.

Scorsese is far from alone in his praise. The Netflix film has also been embraced by a broad range of high-profile filmmakers and artists, including Alfonso Cuarón, Ava DuVernay, Francis Ford Coppola, Bradley Cooper, Margot Robbie, Celine Song, Bill Hader, and Jon Favreau, further cementing the movie as one of the year’s most admired films.

Guillermo del Toro Amazed by Overwhelming Praise for Frankenstein

Frankenstein director Gullirmo del Toro has expressed surprise over the overwhelming response the movie has received since its release. “What is insane for me is the way the audience has reacted,” the filmmaker told The Hollywood Reporter.

I’ve never in 30 years had this reaction. It’s a massive tidal wave of affection — I’ve been getting public and private communications from filmmakers I absolutely adore and worship, that talk about the movie with admiration or with great pride.

“It feels overwhelming, and it leaves you without a horizon,” he added. Del Toro also opened up about the struggles he faced while working on the movie, noting that once finished, it left him lost and without direction.

Frankenstein was released in October 2025 in limited theaters ahead of its Netflix premiere and continues to play in Los Angeles, New York, Miami, Philadelphia, and other cities across the country, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The film also ranked among Netflix’s five most-watched movies of the year within its first five weeks of release and is now emerging as a strong Oscar contender.

Frankenstein is Emerging as a Major Oscar Contender

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has released shortlists for several Oscar categories. And Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein has quickly positioned itself as a serious player for this award season.

The movie has earned six shortlist mentions, placing it just behind Wicked: For Good and Sinners, who lead the mentions in eight categories. The movie also secured a spot in the newly introduced Best Casting category, announced earlier last year.

Frankenstein’s Oscar shortlist mentions:

  • Best Casting
  • Best Cinematography
  • Best Makeup and Hairstyling
  • Best Music (Original Score)
  • Best Sound
  • Best Visual Effects

Despite the momentum, director Guillermo del Toro has expressed some uncertainty about the film’s chances in marquee categories such as directing and writing. Still, his passion for discussing and championing Frankenstein continues to fuel its awards buzz.
