Since its release all the way back in 2019, South Korean filmmaker Bong Joon-Ho’s Oscar-winning magnum opus, Parasite, is still the talk of many cinephiles and film enthusiasts.
Unfortunately, in some markets where Netflix operates, the film will be unavailable to stream on the platform after February 1, 2026 (via Netflix Tudum). Therefore, if you want to rewatch the film, or even watch it for the first time, then now is your chance, before it leaves for another platform.

Considered one of the most legendary and popular films of this century, Parasite received an unthinkable critical reception, truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience. And despite the language barrier being one of the biggest challenges for foreign films, this movie managed to overcome it to bag the Best Picture award at the Oscars.
Talking about this unplanned and unforeseen success at the Academy Awards, director Bong Joon-Ho, in a backstage Q&A with The Wrap, claimed that he never expected foreign films to be anything more than niche. But it seems like he unintentionally proved that it wasn’t the case anymore, saying:
I feel like I was already a little late. People already were overcoming these barriers, from streaming services, YouTube, social media. And in the environment that we’re currently living in, I feel we’re all connected. So naturally, I feel we will come to a day when a foreign language film or not, it doesn’t matter. A foreign language film like this won’t be much of an issue hopefully.
Naturally, since then, we have seen mainstream audiences looking at new and upcoming foreign films with the potential to be just like Parasite in terms of quality and excellence.

For decades, people around the world have looked to Hollywood as the destination for the most financially and critically successful film projects, making it the Mecca of filmmaking.
And while South Korean and other film industries existed, they were seen as nothing more than niche sectors of filmmaking, famous only among connoisseurs of the craft. But when Parasite became an unstoppable force in the global film industry, people realised that South Korea was more than just exceptional Korean Thrillers.
Thus, not only did the film raise awareness of excellence beyond Hollywood, but it also led people to praise and revere other major filmmaking environments beyond large-scale California studios.
